How to Prepare for an Echo at Home

Good news: there’s almost nothing you need to do.

A standard echocardiogram needs no special preparation. You can eat, drink and take your usual medications unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

A few simple things help the visit go smoothly:

  • Wear a loose top that’s easy to remove or open at the front.
  • Have a list of your current medications nearby.
  • Clear a little space beside the bed or couch for the equipment.
  • Plan for about 30 to 60 minutes.

During the scan, you’ll lie on your side while the sonographer moves a small probe with gel across your chest. You may be asked to hold your breath briefly. It doesn’t hurt, and many patients find it surprisingly relaxing.
